How to calculate total cost currency conversion by channel

Mid-market equivalent = amount sent times the mid-market rate, with no markup or fee applied. For each channel, compute what is actually delivered: subtract any flat fee from the sent amount first if the fee is taken before conversion, then multiply by that channel's own rate, mid-market rate times (1 minus its markup percentage). Common mistakes

Do not compare channels by their advertised fee alone while ignoring an embedded rate markup, which can cost more than a flat fee despite a 'no fee' or 'zero commission' claim, add a channel's fee and markup cost together incorrectly when the fee is taken before conversion rather than after, or compare a same-day cash-pickup channel against a multi-day bank transfer without also considering that a delayed transfer's eventual rate is not locked in at the moment of comparison.

A channel advertising zero fees has not necessarily removed cost from a transfer; it may have folded that cost into the rate itself as a markup, which Regulation E's disclosure rule addresses by requiring the exchange rate to be shown alongside any fee, precisely so a 'no fee' claim cannot be read as a 'no cost' claim without checking the disclosed rate against a mid-market benchmark.

Where the mid-market benchmark itself comes from

Every total-cost figure in this guide's worked example depends on the 1.0850 mid-market rate chosen as the comparison benchmark; a different benchmark, pulled from a different data provider or a different moment during a trading day, would shift every channel's total-cost figure by roughly the same amount without changing which channel ranks cheapest relative to the others. A comparison across channels is only meaningful when every channel's delivered amount is measured against the identical benchmark rate and the identical moment in time, since comparing each channel against its own, separately timed benchmark reintroduces the exact cross-source inconsistency this guide's method is meant to remove.
