Add value added tax to a net amount and see the VAT and the gross invoice figure.

Gross amount

Net consideration and VAT

Value added tax starts with a net supply amount. VAT equals net amount multiplied by the stated percentage, and gross equals net plus VAT. The calculation treats the entered rate as one rate for the entire supply; it does not decide whether the seller is registered or whether an item has a reduced or zero rate.

A gross-invoice calculation

A $1,200 net invoice at 20% creates $240 VAT and a $1,440 gross amount. The tax is one fifth of the net figure, not one fifth of the gross invoice. That distinction is why a gross price must be divided by 1.20 when tax has to be backed out.

Output and input VAT are different

Invoice readers often confuse output VAT charged to a customer with input VAT that may be recoverable on purchases. They are different sides of a return and cannot be netted merely because both appear as tax. Currency conversion, credit notes, deposits, and partial exemption can also change the taxable amount.

Registration and supply rules lie outside

Use this calculation when a net price and a confirmed rate are already available. It does not prepare a return, determine place of supply, select the tax point, or prove input-tax recovery. The applicable legislation and invoice evidence set those answers.

Four figures worth retaining

A clean invoice shows net consideration, VAT rate, VAT amount, and gross consideration. Preserving those four values makes it possible to audit a correction without trying to reconstruct the rate from a rounded total.

Credit notes deserve the same net-and-tax separation as the original invoice. Returning part of a supply normally changes both consideration and the associated VAT, so a gross-only adjustment hides what needs correcting. A deposit can also have a different tax point from final delivery. Record whether an amount is a quote, advance payment, final invoice, or credit; the multiplication is simple, but its date and document role determine whether it belongs in the same period.

Where a supply contains items at different rates, list each net line and its rate separately. A blended percentage cannot show which part of a correction belongs to which supply.
