Growing an APY to maturity

A certificate of deposit quoted in APY can be grown directly as deposit × (1 + APY) raised to the fraction of a year. APY already reflects the institution's compounding method, so the calculation does not divide it again by the number of months. The model assumes interest remains in the CD until maturity.

Worked eighteen-month maturity

A $15,000 deposit at 4.25% APY for eighteen months becomes $15,966.34. Interest is $966.34. The exponent is 18 divided by 12, or 1.5 years, which is why the result is more than one year's interest but less than two years' interest.

Read the rate label and dates

Confirm that the rate offered is APY rather than a nominal rate and that the term begins when expected. A CD can have a funding window, a maturity date, and a renewal rule that differ from a simple calendar estimate. If interest is paid to another account rather than retained, the final value follows a different path.

Early exit changes the result

Early withdrawal penalties matter when the deposit might be needed before maturity. A penalty expressed as several months of interest can reduce the gain or consume principal in some circumstances. This result is therefore a maturity comparison, not a promise about cash available after an early exit.

What a maturity value leaves out

The formula excludes tax on interest, deposit-insurance limits, rate changes after maturity, and any automatic renewal. It also assumes no additional deposits; a CD is unlike a savings account with monthly transfers. Use an account's disclosure for penalty, renewal, and crediting details before locking money away.

Compare dates as well as yields

Compare CDs by their maturity date as well as APY. A slightly lower yield that matches a planned expense can be more useful than a higher rate that requires an inconvenient term. Preserve the advertised APY, term, and maturity date with the calculation so later offers can be compared on the same basis.

A laddering question

When several future expenses have different dates, separate CDs can reduce the need to break one large certificate early. This calculator values one deposit and one term; a ladder needs each maturity and reinvestment decision recorded independently.

Interest paid out changes the reinvestment path

Some certificates send interest to a linked account instead of leaving it in the certificate. In that case the APY-based maturity calculation overstates the amount still inside the CD because the paid-out interest no longer compounds there. Check whether the disclosed APY assumes retained interest and record where each credit is deposited.
